Richard Hawley
Coles Corner
Mute

The '70s came back, then the '80s, and next, it's…no, not the '90s, but the '50s! Yes, that's right, kids. The music your parents made out to in the back seat of that '57 Chevy after slow dancing at the prom is back in style, in the form of former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley's new solo CD, Coles Corner.

Although definitely retro, and definitely not hip, Hawley's effort is a fine one, with delicate lilting melodies that comfort and soothe the soul. His crooning is as rich as ever, and despite his British accent, the prevailing sound is a distinctly American one. It's Leonard Cohen and then it's Johnny Cash, but even on CD, instead of vinyl, it's as warm, sweet, and soft as a grandmother's arms.

Although your grandparents are just as apt to listen to this one as you are, that doesn't mean it's not appealing. And if you're expecting the cheeky lyrics of Pulp, there isn't a trace of irony or sarcasm on the whole disc. Keep your mind and the windows open and listen to this one on a quiet summer night, cuddled up next to your sweetheart.

A. Koledin
